Walk and Talk with Mayor Ginther

This past Tuesday, I had the opportunity to take part in a walk with Mayor Andrew Ginther around the Park of Roses. Mayor Ginther gathered a group of community leaders to find out what issues we are seeing in our work and conversations with neighbors. I updated the Mayor on the work of the new CAC Task Force on Homelessness, shared concerns about housing affordability, and expressed safety concerns over the speed limit on High Street along our small business corridor heavily trafficked by pedestrians, bicyclists, and public transit riders. He was receptive to all of our concerns and encouraged me to invite his Director of Housing Strategies to an upcoming CAC meeting.

Share Your Thoughts: City Council Redistricting Maps

In 2018, Columbus voters elected to add two additional seats to Columbus City Council and create residential districts within which Councilmembers must reside. As part of this process, an independent, citizen-led commission, the Council Residential Districting Commission (CRDC) was formed to create a map with nine districts.

The CRDC will submit three maps to Council and Council will vote and choose one of those maps. These districts will go into effect in the 2023 Council election. After public discussion at the most recent two CAC meetings, the CAC shared a joint statement through the leadership of our Chair, David Vottero, that I fully support:

"The Clintonville Area Commission wishes to relate our paramount concern that any Districting Map adopted by the City of Columbus respects the integrity of the CAC boundary. For almost 50 years Clintonville has been defined by these boundaries, established by Columbus City Council, which built upon the natural and manmade boundaries, and woven together by the development pattern of the urbanization of our community for the past 150 years. 

We understand that Clintonville will represent approximately 1/3 of any future District, and we look forward to working with our surrounding neighbors towards the betterment of our city, but we wish to express our desire that any District Plan that is adopted includes Clintonville in its entirety. We are encouraged that two of the three maps recently proposed by the Districting Commission respect the integrity of Clintonville. 

 

We wish to express our thanks to the Districting Commission for their hard work and public engagement efforts over the course of the past year, we wish them success as they continue their work and look forward to supporting them with a plan which includes a unified Clintonville, while we are aware that no map will meet the expectations of every neighborhood or resident, we will be unbowed in our advocacy to remain a united Clintonville."
